After being an advocate and financier for Bluesky during his tenure as CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey has resigned from the board of the decentralized social media platform.
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has departed from the board of Bluesky, the decentralized social network he initiated and financially backed in 2019 while serving as Twitter’s CEO.
Bluesky officially confirmed Dorsey’s departure on May 5 through a post on the platform, expressing gratitude for his instrumental role in launching and financing the project. However, neither Bluesky nor Dorsey provided a specific explanation for his decision to step down. At the time of reporting, Bluesky had not responded to requests for further comment.
Earlier, Dorsey responded tersely with a “no” to a query on X regarding his current status on Bluesky’s board. Concurrently, Dorsey, a prominent figure in the tech sector, was actively promoting his grants for open interest protocols on X, characterizing the social network now owned by Elon Musk as “freedom technology.”
X account Big Tech Alert, which tracks social activity among tech executives, noted that Dorsey had unfollowed “well over 2000 people,” narrowing his follow list down to just three individuals: Musk, Stella Assange (wife of imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange), and NSA contractor-turned-whistleblower Edward Snowden. Dorsey’s decision to retain Musk on his follow list, coupled with his endorsement of X, suggests a potential reconciliation between the two.
In April 2023, Dorsey publicly criticized Musk on Bluesky, alleging mismanagement of X and expressing disapproval of the board’s decision to sell to him, as reported by TechCrunch.
Dorsey originally unveiled Bluesky in late 2019 during his tenure as Twitter’s CEO, announcing the company’s commitment to funding a small independent team to develop an open and decentralized standard for social media.
Bluesky entered beta testing in March 2023 and was made available to the public on February 7, 2024. According to its own data, the platform currently boasts approximately 5.6 million users.
