Crypto’s biggest political spender had a split night. Fairshake-backed candidates swept primaries in Michigan and Washington on Tuesday. Then the PAC failed at something it spent heavily to pull off: unseating a sitting Detroit congressman. More in crypto news.

Fairshake and its affiliates put more than $1.3 million behind Michigan Republican Bill Huizenga and behind Washington Democrats Suzan DelBene, Kim Schrier, and Marilyn Strickland. All four won. Republican Amanda McKinney also advanced in Washington and was backed by over $500,000 from Fairshake affiliate Defend American Jobs.

Why Fairshake Could Not Unseat Shri Thanedar

Here’s the part that doesn’t fit the winning streak narrative. Fairshake spent north of $2 million trying to knock out Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar in his Detroit primary over his digital-asset positions. His progressive opponent won anyway, and won while being badly outspent.

That matters more than one race would normally suggest. A $193 million war chest buys influence, not certainty, and this loss is proof it doesn’t guarantee a result against an incumbent with real local organizing behind him.

Tuesday’s Michigan and Washington wins do extend a run that includes Fairshake’s May win over longtime Texas Representative Al Green with pro-crypto candidate Christian Menefee. But stack Thanedar’s result next to that, and the PAC looks less like an unstoppable machine and more like a well-funded operation that wins most fights, not all of them.

What Fairshake’s Mixed Results Mean for Crypto’s Political Strategy

Fairshake runs two arms, a Republican-facing one and a Democratic-facing one called Protect Progress, both active in the same races at once. That’s deliberate. It lets the PAC back favorable candidates regardless of which party ends up controlling Congress after November, which is a big part of why it keeps winning even in a contested cycle.

The Thanedar loss won’t slow Fairshake down. It does puncture the industry line that crypto money can’t be beaten in a primary. Alabama votes August 11. Texas and Illinois follow. Whether Tuesday was a fluke or the start of a rougher patch should become clear soon enough.
