Metaplanet Denies Bitcoin Sale, Launches BitBonds
Metaplanet denied selling Bitcoin after a 5,014 BTC transfer and launched BitBonds, a debt program designed to fund future BTC purchases.
!Metaplanet Unveils BitBonds After BTC Sale Rumors
- Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich denied the company sold Bitcoin after a 5,014 BTC transfer, worth about $320 million, drew attention online.
- Gerovich said the transfer was a routine move between the company’s own custody addresses, and that its holdings remain unchanged at 43,000 BTC.
- The denial came the same day Metaplanet launched BitBonds, a fixed-rate debt program the Tokyo-listed firm can use to raise capital without selling Bitcoin or issuing new shares.
Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich denied that the company sold any Bitcoin after a 5,014 BTC transfer, worth roughly $320 million, moved between company wallets and drew attention from on-chain observers. Bitcoin trades near $63,792 as of this writing, according to Coinscipher’s live pricing.
A Routine Transfer Read as a Sale
“We transferred 5,014 BTC between Metaplanet custodial addresses over the past 24 hours,” Gerovich wrote on X. “This was a routine custody operation. No bitcoin was sold, and our holdings remain 43,000 BTC.” He added that the movement was visible to outside observers because Metaplanet publishes its Bitcoin addresses. That allowed anyone to track transfers between them in real time.

All of our addresses are published, which is why the transfers were observable in real time.…

The speculation followed a separate development. Strategy, the largest corporate Bitcoin holder, sold 6,948 BTC for roughly $432.5 million earlier this year, a move that left some traders watching other large corporate holders for signs of similar selling. Metaplanet’s transfer landed in that same environment, which likely contributed to how quickly it was read as a liquidation rather than an internal custody move.
This isn’t a story about whether Metaplanet is quietly exiting its Bitcoin position. It’s about how easily a routine wallet transfer gets misread once a market is already primed to expect large holders to start selling.
BitBonds Gives Metaplanet a New Way to Raise Cash
The denial came the same day Metaplanet launched BitBonds, a fixed-rate debt program the company can use to fund future Bitcoin purchases and other corporate needs. Metaplanet said in an official filing that it intends to keep issuing bonds under the program based on market conditions, and that over the medium to long term it plans to move toward public bond offerings made under a formal securities registration filing.
Debt financing gives Metaplanet a way to raise capital without immediately selling Bitcoin or diluting shareholders through new stock issuance, an alternative to the equity-heavy approach several Bitcoin treasury companies have leaned on. The tradeoff is that debt comes with fixed obligations regardless of what Bitcoin’s price does, meaning Metaplanet now has payments to make on the bonds whether its Bitcoin holdings are rising or falling in value.
Metaplanet has continued adding to its Bitcoin treasury through 2026, buying 5,075 BTC in the first quarter and another 1,005 BTC in June, bringing its total holdings to 43,000 BTC, worth close to $3 billion at current prices. Coinscipher has tracked the broader trend of corporate Bitcoin treasuries adjusting their financing strategies this year, and BitBonds marks Metaplanet’s clearest step yet toward diversifying how it funds future purchases beyond straightforward stock sales.
