MetaMask review 2026: the default EVM wallet, and its limits

MetaMask is the most-used self-custody wallet for Ethereum and every EVM chain. Here's what it does well, where it falls short, and how to use it safely in 2026.

Verdict

MetaMask is the default self-custody wallet for the EVM ecosystem for a reason: it works with every dapp, has been battle-tested over years, and gives you full control over your private keys. If you're using Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, or any EVM chain, MetaMask is a legitimate primary choice.

Where it falls short: transaction previews aren't as informative as Rabby's, swap spreads are wider than going direct to a DEX, and it doesn't natively support non-EVM chains. For most users these are minor. For active DeFi users, Rabby is often a better daily driver.

Who MetaMask is best for

  • First-time self-custody users on Ethereum or an EVM chain — well-documented, widely-supported
  • Anyone using multiple EVM chains — chain switching is straightforward
  • Users pairing with a hardware wallet — Ledger, Trezor, and Lattice integrations work reliably
  • Casual DeFi users — enough transaction preview to be safe for most interactions

Who should look elsewhere

  • Serious DeFi power users — Rabby's transaction preview and phishing detection are meaningfully better
  • Solana users — use Phantom or Backpack
  • Bitcoin-only users — use a Bitcoin-specific wallet (Sparrow, Electrum, or a hardware wallet's native app)
  • Users who don't want to manage seed phrases at all — consider an account-abstraction wallet or a smart-wallet like Safe

Setting up MetaMask safely

  1. Download only from the official source — metamask.io for the extension, official app stores for mobile
  2. Choose "Create a new wallet." Set a local device password
  3. Write down the seed phrase — physically, on paper
  4. Confirm the seed phrase by re-selecting the words in order
  5. Consider pairing with a hardware wallet from day one for anything above a few hundred dollars

The most common ways users lose money with MetaMask

  • Losing the seed phrase. No recovery, no support call.
  • Sharing the seed phrase. MetaMask support does not exist. Anyone offering it is scamming you.
  • Signing malicious transactions. Attackers craft transactions that look normal but authorize a full drain. Slow down. Use Rabby if you can.
  • Approving unlimited spend on valuable tokens. Audit approvals periodically via revoke.cash.
  • Using the same wallet for everything. Separate wallets for long-term holdings, active DeFi, and experimentation.

Frequently asked questions

Is MetaMask safe?
MetaMask itself is a mature, widely-audited piece of software. The most common way to lose funds using MetaMask is not the wallet — it's approving a malicious transaction or exposing your seed phrase. Treat every signature as a real financial commitment. Use a hardware wallet for anything above a few hundred dollars.
Where is my crypto actually stored?
Your crypto lives on the blockchain, not in MetaMask. MetaMask stores the private key that lets you spend the crypto. If MetaMask disappeared tomorrow, you could recover your funds using the same seed phrase in any compatible wallet — Rabby, Frame, Trust Wallet, or a hardware wallet.
What is a seed phrase?
A seed phrase (also called recovery phrase) is a list of 12 or 24 words that mathematically encodes your private key. Whoever knows the seed phrase controls the wallet, forever. Write it down on paper. Never take a photo of it. Never type it into a website. Never share it with anyone claiming to be MetaMask support — there is no such person.
MetaMask vs Rabby — which is better?
MetaMask has the widest dapp compatibility; every serious dapp supports it. Rabby has better transaction preview, integrated phishing detection, and a nicer swap aggregator. Many DeFi users run Rabby as their primary wallet and keep MetaMask installed as a fallback for the rare dapp that only supports MetaMask.
Does MetaMask work with Solana or Bitcoin?
Not natively. MetaMask is built for Ethereum and EVM chains. MetaMask Snaps enables limited support for non-EVM chains including Solana, but for Solana specifically most users prefer Phantom. For Bitcoin, use a dedicated Bitcoin wallet.
