Answer first

Shiba Inu (SHIB) is an ERC-20 memecoin on Ethereum, launched in August 2020 by an anonymous developer using the pseudonym "Ryoshi." Originally positioned as "the Dogecoin killer," SHIB has grown from a single meme token into an ecosystem with its own Layer 2 blockchain (Shibarium, launched August 2023), decentralized exchange (ShibaSwap), multiple companion tokens (LEASH, BONE, planned TREAT), and one of the largest and most vocal communities in crypto ("ShibArmy"). SHIB remains a top-25 cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

Origin and the Vitalik burn story

Shiba Inu launched in August 2020 with an initial supply of 1 quadrillion SHIB — deliberately absurd, keeping per-token value very low so casual buyers could hold "billions" of SHIB for pocket change.

The creator, using the pseudonym "Ryoshi," sent 50% of the total supply (~500 trillion SHIB) to Vitalik Buterin's public Ethereum address as a marketing move. Vitalik hadn't asked for it and had no formal involvement with SHIB — but as the highest-profile person in Ethereum, sending him half the supply guaranteed attention.

In May 2021, Vitalik responded:

  1. Burned ~410 trillion SHIB — permanently destroyed by sending to a burn address. This was ~90% of what Vitalik had received.
  2. Donated the remaining SHIB — approximately $1 billion at the time — to India's COVID-19 relief crypto fund coordinated by Sandeep Nailwal (Polygon co-founder).

Vitalik publicly criticized founders sending large unsolicited allocations to prominent figures, calling the practice bad for the industry.

The burn event was the single biggest thing that ever happened to SHIB. It:

  • Permanently reduced supply by ~40%
  • Created a "supply shock" narrative that fueled retail buying
  • Established SHIB as the leading Dogecoin-alternative memecoin

The Ryoshi exit (May 2022)

In May 2022, Ryoshi posted a farewell message on the official Shiba Inu blog. The core message: "I am nothing, we are Shiba." Ryoshi deleted his tweets and Medium posts, effectively exiting the project.

This mirrored Satoshi Nakamoto's exit from Bitcoin — a deliberate step-away by the founder to reduce founder-centric governance risk.

Post-Ryoshi, Shiba Inu is led by another pseudonymous developer named "Shytoshi Kusama" who has been visible in the community since 2021.

1. SHIB — the flagship token

  • ERC-20 on Ethereum
  • ~589 trillion SHIB in circulation as of 2026 (down from 1 quadrillion after burns)
  • Widely listed on virtually every major exchange
  • Primary community rallying point

2. LEASH — the "leash" companion token

  • Originally launched as a rebase token, later repurposed
  • Much smaller supply (~107,000 LEASH total)
  • Now serves as a governance and access token (NFT airdrops, ecosystem privileges)

3. BONE — governance + Shibarium gas

  • Used for governance voting in ShibaSwap and the broader Shiba Inu ecosystem
  • Also serves as the gas token for Shibarium (not SHIB — this is important)

4. TREAT — the planned metaverse token

  • Announced but not yet launched as of early 2026
  • Planned for the Shiba Inu Metaverse and gaming ecosystem
  • Positioning is speculative; delivery timeline has slipped multiple times

5. ShibaSwap — the native DEX

  • Automated market maker DEX launched July 2021
  • Trades SHIB, LEASH, BONE, and other tokens
  • Fees flow to "BURY" (staking) pools; a portion of fees is used for SHIB burns

6. Shibarium — the Layer 2

  • Launched mainnet August 2023 (after a chaotic beta with initial bugs)
  • EVM-compatible; built on technology derived from Polygon's CDK
  • BONE is the gas token
  • Purpose: give the Shiba Inu ecosystem cheap, fast infrastructure for DeFi, NFTs, gaming
  • TVL is modest by absolute standards but the network is operating

7. Shiba Inu Metaverse / Gaming (Shib: The Metaverse)

  • Announced multi-year initiative to build a Shiba Inu-themed metaverse
  • Land plots were sold in early phases
  • Progress has been slow relative to announcements
  • The forthcoming TREAT token is intended for this ecosystem

SHIB tokenomics and burns

Initial supply: 1 quadrillion SHIB (1,000,000,000,000,000)

Major supply reductions:

  • May 2021: ~410 trillion SHIB burned by Vitalik Buterin
  • Various community-driven burns (ShibaSwap fees, Shibarium mechanics)

Current circulating supply: ~589 trillion SHIB as of 2026

Ongoing burn mechanisms:

  • ShibaSwap trading fees fund burns
  • Shibarium activity (bridging, transaction fees on certain flows) contributes to SHIB burns
  • Community-driven burn campaigns

Because supply is so large, burns of even a few trillion SHIB per year represent a small percentage of total supply. Meaningful supply reduction requires sustained ecosystem activity.

Where SHIB sits in 2026

Market position. SHIB remains a top-25 cryptocurrency by market capitalization. It's still the second-most recognized "dog coin" after Dogecoin.

Ecosystem strength:

  • Community — ShibArmy remains one of the largest and most active communities in crypto
  • Ecosystem tokens — LEASH, BONE, TREAT layered on beyond just SHIB
  • Shibarium — operational L2 giving the ecosystem its own infrastructure
  • Exchange presence — near-universal listing

Where SHIB is weaker:

  • Real utility beyond speculation — most SHIB volume is speculative rather than payment/DeFi
  • DeFi TVL — ShibaSwap and Shibarium ecosystems are much smaller than major DeFi ecosystems
  • Metaverse/gaming delivery — announced but slow-shipping
  • Fundamental value drivers — as a memecoin, price largely tracks sentiment rather than fundamentals

Where to buy and store SHIB

Exchanges. Universally available:

  • US regulated: Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, Robinhood, PayPal, Cash App
  • Global: Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, OKX, Bitget, Crypto.com, virtually every venue

Storage. SHIB is an ERC-20 token, storable in any Ethereum-compatible wallet:

  • Hardware: Ledger, Trezor
  • Software: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Rabby, Exodus
  • Bridged to Shibarium — bridge SHIB to Shibarium for cheaper transactions within that ecosystem

Sending SHIB on Ethereum — subject to Ethereum gas fees (typically $1-$10+ per transaction). On Shibarium, transactions cost fractions of a cent.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shiba Inu?
Shiba Inu is an ERC-20 memecoin launched in August 2020 by an anonymous developer using the pseudonym 'Ryoshi.' Originally positioned as 'the Dogecoin killer,' SHIB has grown far beyond a single memecoin into an ecosystem with its own Layer 2 blockchain (Shibarium), decentralized exchange (ShibaSwap), and multiple ecosystem tokens (LEASH, BONE, planned TREAT). SHIB itself remains the primary token by market capitalization and community recognition.
How did SHIB get so much attention?
Three factors. First, timing — SHIB launched in August 2020 into a hot memecoin market and captured the 'Dogecoin killer' narrative. Second, the Vitalik Buterin donation and burn — Ryoshi sent Vitalik 50% of the total SHIB supply as a marketing move; in May 2021, Vitalik burned ~410 trillion SHIB (~90% of what he received, roughly $6.5 billion at the time) and donated the remainder to India COVID relief funds. This single event burned a massive percentage of SHIB supply, creating a supply-shock narrative. Third, community — the 'ShibArmy' became one of the largest and most vocal communities in crypto, driving retail attention and exchange listings.
Who is Ryoshi and where is he now?
Ryoshi is the pseudonymous creator of Shiba Inu. Never publicly identified. In May 2022, Ryoshi posted a farewell message on the Shiba Inu blog effectively exiting the project, deleting his tweets and Medium posts, and stating that he 'was not important' to Shiba Inu's future. This mirrored Satoshi Nakamoto's exit from Bitcoin — deliberately walking away from a project to reduce founder-centric risk. Post-Ryoshi, Shiba Inu is led by another pseudonymous developer named 'Shytoshi Kusama' who has been visible in the community since 2021.
What is Shibarium?
Shibarium is Shiba Inu's Layer 2 blockchain, launched mainnet in August 2023 (after a chaotic beta phase). It's built on Ethereum-compatible technology (originally based on Polygon's CDK stack). Shibarium uses BONE as its gas token (not SHIB). The purpose is to give the Shiba Inu ecosystem its own cheap, fast blockchain for applications — DeFi, NFTs, gaming — without depending entirely on Ethereum mainnet fees. Shibarium adoption has been modest by absolute TVL standards but real.
What are the tokens in the Shiba Inu ecosystem?
Four main tokens. (1) SHIB — the flagship token, ERC-20 on Ethereum. (2) LEASH — a much smaller supply token, originally intended as a rebase token, later repurposed as a governance and NFT access token. (3) BONE — used for governance in ShibaSwap and as the gas token for Shibarium. (4) TREAT — announced but not yet launched as of early 2026, planned for the Shiba Inu Metaverse and gaming ecosystem. Each token has distinct utility; SHIB is the highest-cap by far.
What is the Vitalik burn story?
In May 2021, Vitalik Buterin (Ethereum co-founder) received ~50% of Shiba Inu's total supply — the developer had sent it to his address as a marketing move, essentially donating half the supply to Vitalik unsolicited. Vitalik responded by burning ~410 trillion SHIB (permanently destroying it by sending to a burn address) and donating the remaining SHIB, worth ~$1 billion at the time, to India's COVID-19 relief crypto fund led by Sandeep Nailwal (Polygon co-founder). Vitalik publicly criticized founders sending large token allocations to prominent figures without permission. The burn event dominated SHIB's narrative and permanently reduced supply.
Are new SHIB being minted?
No new SHIB is minted (it's a fixed-supply ERC-20 token). But SHIB is continuously being burned through the community's burn mechanism — some of ShibaSwap trading fees convert to SHIB and get burned, and various Shibarium activities also contribute to burning. Burns reduce circulating supply gradually. Current supply is approximately 589 trillion SHIB as of 2026, down from the original 1 quadrillion after the Vitalik burn and subsequent smaller burns.
Where can I buy SHIB?
SHIB is one of the most widely-listed memecoins. Available on Coinbase, Kraken, Binance, Bybit, KuCoin, Crypto.com, OKX, Bitget, Robinhood, PayPal, and effectively every major exchange. SHIB is an ERC-20 token, storable in any Ethereum-compatible wallet (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Rabby, Ledger, Trezor). Because SHIB is a very small unit of value, users often see amounts in trillions or billions of SHIB — this reflects the large total supply, not any technical difference from other tokens.
