  • Suncorp does not sell crypto directly and that has not changed.
  • Australian exchanges now need an AFSL under a law passed in April 2026.
  • The ‘no-action’ grace period for existing platforms ends June 30, 2026.

Suncorp does not sell cryptocurrency directly, and that part of this guide has not changed. What has changed is the exchange side of the transaction. The Corporations Amendment (Digital Assets Framework) Bill 2025 received Royal Assent on April 8, 2026 and it requires every Australian crypto exchange and custody provider to hold an Australian Financial Services Licence. More in crypto investing.

This is not a story about Suncorp adding crypto features. It is about which exchanges are legally allowed to keep operating once the transition period ends.

What the New Law Actually Requires

Before this bill, Australian exchanges only needed to register with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider. That covered anti-money laundering checks, not how client funds were held or disclosed.

The new framework adds a second layer. Exchanges and custody platforms now fall under two categories: Digital Asset Platforms and Tokenised Custody Platforms. Both require an AFSL from ASIC, the same license structure used by brokers and fund managers.

ASIC issued a sector-wide no action position while platforms apply. That relief period ends June 30, 2026. Exchanges that have not lodged an application by then lose the protection.

Can You Buy Crypto With Suncorp?

No. Suncorp does not offer a crypto purchasing feature and does not partner with any exchange. Customers can still move funds from a Suncorp account to a regulated exchange, and Suncorp places no special restriction on that transfer beyond its normal terms.

How to Buy Crypto Using a Suncorp Account

The process runs through an external exchange, not through Suncorp itself.

Choose a licensed exchange.

eToro is registered with ASIC and continues to serve Australian customers through the current transition period. Confirm a platform’s licensing status before depositing funds, since the rules changed mid-2026.

Complete identity verification.

Exchanges require a government ID and proof of address under standard KYC rules. Approval typically takes one to three business days.

Link your Suncorp account.

Select bank transfer as the deposit method and enter your Suncorp account details when prompted.

Deposit AUD.

Funds usually clear within a few business days, depending on the transfer method.

Buy the asset.

Go ahead and purchase your preferred coin. But before you do, confirm live pricing, since they change throughout the day.

Why the Licensing Change Matters to Buyers

An AFSL requirement changes how an exchange has to treat customer funds. Licensed platforms must segregate client assets, disclose conflicts of interest, and maintain a dispute resolution scheme. Unlicensed platforms operating past the June deadline carry real regulatory risk, not just a compliance footnote.

Checking a platform’s license status is now a practical step, not an optional one. Buyers moving funds from Suncorp should confirm an exchange’s AFSL or AUSTRAC status directly through ASIC’s register rather than relying on marketing claims.

For what happens after the purchase, the crypto tax guide covers how the ATO treats gains and staking income.
