Answer first

BNB is Binance's native cryptocurrency, launched in July 2017. It plays two related but distinct roles: (1) a utility token on the Binance exchange (fee discount, VIP tier qualifier), and (2) the gas token of BNB Chain (a separate EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain launched September 2020). BNB is one of the top-5 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization and has a quarterly burn mechanism that reduces total supply over time — from an initial 200 million BNB toward a target of 100 million.

The three lives of BNB

BNB has migrated across three chains during its existence, which is important to understand:

  1. ERC-20 on Ethereum (July 2017 – April 2019). BNB launched as an Ethereum ERC-20 token via Binance's Initial Coin Offering, raising $15 million. The ICO price was ~$0.10 per BNB.
  1. BEP-2 on Binance Chain (April 2019 – ongoing). Binance launched its own Layer 1 blockchain (Binance Chain) as a specialized order-book-optimized chain, and migrated BNB from Ethereum to Binance Chain. Binance Chain still operates today, primarily as a fast trading-focused chain.
  1. BEP-20 on Binance Smart Chain / BNB Chain (September 2020 – ongoing). Binance launched a second Layer 1 blockchain, Binance Smart Chain, with EVM compatibility. This is where most BNB usage happens today. In 2022, Binance Chain and Binance Smart Chain were collectively rebranded as "BNB Chain" (BNB Beacon Chain for the older Binance Chain, BNB Smart Chain for the EVM chain).

Most users today interact with BNB as a BEP-20 token on BNB Smart Chain. Bridging between the two BNB Chain sub-networks is possible but rarely necessary for retail users.

1. Binance exchange fee discount

Holding BNB and enabling "Pay fees in BNB" in your Binance account settings gives a 25% discount on all trading fees. This applies to spot, margin, and derivatives (with slightly different mechanics on futures). For an active Binance trader, this is a meaningful ongoing saving — the effective trading fee at the Regular tier drops from 0.10% to 0.075%.

2. Binance VIP tier qualifier

Binance's VIP tier is set by whichever is higher between your 30-day trading volume and your BNB balance. Holding a threshold amount of BNB can qualify you for a VIP tier without trading heavily:

  • VIP 1 — 5+ BNB (~$3,000 depending on price)
  • VIP 2 — 25+ BNB
  • VIP 3 — 100+ BNB

Higher tiers require both meaningful BNB balance and trading volume.

3. BNB Chain gas token

Every transaction on BNB Chain (BNB Smart Chain) pays fees in BNB. Fees are typically $0.05 to $0.20 per transaction, compared with Ethereum mainnet where fees can range from $0.50 to $50+ depending on congestion. This makes BNB Chain a popular venue for retail DeFi where Ethereum mainnet fees are prohibitive.

4. Ecosystem utility

  • Binance Launchpad — participation in Binance's new-token sales requires holding BNB
  • BNB Chain validator staking — validators must stake BNB to participate in consensus; delegators can stake BNB with validators
  • DeFi collateral and trading — BNB is a base pair on major BNB Chain DEXs (PancakeSwap, others)
  • Payments (Binance Pay) — zero-fee crypto transfers between Binance users, often denominated in BNB

The burn mechanism

BNB has a quarterly auto-burn system designed to reduce total supply from the initial 200 million toward a target of 100 million.

The burn amount each quarter is calculated by a formula involving:

  • The BNB price during the quarter (lower price → more BNB burned)
  • The number of blocks produced on BNB Chain during the quarter
  • A subject cap that limits maximum burn per quarter

Additional real-time burns occur through:

  • BEP-95 gas burn — a portion of each transaction's gas fee is burned (similar to Ethereum's EIP-1559)
  • BNB Pioneer Burn Program — accidental BNB losses (sent to wrong addresses) are compensated with new BNB and offset by burning equivalent amounts

Cumulative burns as of early 2026 have reduced circulating BNB supply to approximately 140 million from the initial 200 million. Burns are verifiable on-chain.

Consensus (Proof of Staked Authority)

BNB Chain uses PoSA — a hybrid Proof of Stake / Proof of Authority mechanism:

  • 41 active validators are selected each epoch from a larger pool ranked by total BNB staked (own + delegator stake)
  • Block time is ~3 seconds with round-robin block production among active validators
  • Finality is ~15 blocks (~45 seconds)
  • Slashing applies for validator misbehavior (double-signing, prolonged offline)

The 41-validator design trades off decentralization for throughput. Ethereum has ~1 million validators; Solana has ~2,000; BNB Chain has 41. This is a real tradeoff — BNB Chain is faster and cheaper but more centralized than either.

EVM compatibility

BNB Chain is fully EVM-compatible. Smart contracts written for Ethereum in Solidity or Vyper compile and deploy on BNB Chain with minimal modification. MetaMask, Rabby, and other Ethereum-compatible wallets support BNB Chain via a custom RPC configuration.

DeFi ecosystem

BNB Chain hosts one of the largest DeFi ecosystems by daily active users. Major protocols:

  • PancakeSwap — largest DEX by daily volume (globally, not just BNB Chain)
  • Venus — leading lending protocol on BNB Chain
  • Alpaca Finance — leveraged yield farming
  • Ellipsis — stablecoin swap DEX
  • Wombat Exchange — cross-chain stableswap

BNB Chain TVL runs in the low billions of dollars — smaller than Ethereum but comparable to Solana in some periods.

The 2023 regulatory event

The November 2023 US DOJ / FinCEN / OFAC / CFTC settlement with Binance had material consequences for BNB accessibility:

  • The settlement was against Binance the exchange (AML and sanctions violations), not BNB the token directly
  • $4.3 billion combined penalty
  • CZ (Changpeng Zhao, founder and then-CEO) stepped down and pleaded guilty
  • Binance.US delisted BNB and many other tokens following banking-relationship losses
  • Most US regulated exchanges (Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini) do not list BNB as of 2026

Result: US customers cannot easily buy BNB on regulated US venues. Access requires either buying BNB directly on-chain (via a DEX with USDC-BNB liquidity) or using a non-US exchange, both of which have complications for US-based customers.

Where BNB sits in 2026

BNB remains a top-5 cryptocurrency by market capitalization. It functions as:

  • Utility token on the largest global crypto exchange (Binance)
  • Gas token on one of the top-3 EVM chains by daily active users (BNB Chain)
  • Deflationary asset via the burn mechanism (approaching a 100M target from 140M current supply)

Where it's weaker: US regulatory access is restricted following the 2023 settlement, and BNB Chain's 41-validator design remains a decentralization concession vs Ethereum or Solana.

Frequently asked questions

What is BNB used for?
BNB has four main uses. First, as a trading fee discount on the Binance exchange — holding BNB and enabling 'Pay fees in BNB' gives 25% off trading fees. Second, as a VIP tier qualifier on Binance — holding enough BNB can qualify you for higher VIP tiers even without high trading volume. Third, as the gas token on BNB Chain (BNB's Layer 1 blockchain) — every transaction on BNB Chain pays fees in BNB. Fourth, as ecosystem utility on BNB Chain for participating in Launchpad token sales, staking on BNB Chain validators, and general DeFi use across the BNB Chain ecosystem.
What is BNB Chain vs Binance?
Binance is the centralized cryptocurrency exchange. BNB Chain is a decentralized Layer 1 blockchain, technically separate from the exchange. BNB Chain (originally called Binance Smart Chain) launched in September 2020 as an EVM-compatible Layer 1 running Proof of Staked Authority consensus. While Binance the exchange was involved in launching BNB Chain, the chain itself is operated by an independent validator set. BNB is the shared native token that both uses: Binance uses BNB for fee discounts; BNB Chain uses BNB for gas.
How does the BNB burn mechanism work?
BNB has a quarterly auto-burn system that permanently destroys BNB tokens to reduce total supply. The burn amount is calculated by a formula based on the BNB price and the number of blocks produced on BNB Chain in the quarter — the lower the BNB price, the more BNB is burned (up to the burn cap). The goal is to reduce total BNB supply from the initial 200 million to 100 million over time. As of early 2026, cumulative burns have reduced circulating supply to approximately 140 million BNB. Burns are verifiable on-chain.
Is BNB the same as Binance stock?
No. BNB is a cryptocurrency native to BNB Chain. Binance the exchange is a private company (not publicly listed). Holding BNB gives you utility on Binance (fee discount) and on BNB Chain (gas), and exposure to BNB Chain's ecosystem value, but it is not equity in Binance the company and doesn't entitle you to any share of Binance's profits or corporate governance rights.
What is Proof of Staked Authority?
PoSA is BNB Chain's consensus mechanism — a hybrid combining Proof of Stake with Proof of Authority. There are currently 41 active validators selected from a larger pool of candidates ranked by BNB staked. Validators produce blocks in a round-robin fashion with ~3-second block times. The design trades off decentralization (smaller validator set than Ethereum) for higher throughput and lower fees than a pure PoS design would deliver.
How is BNB Chain different from Ethereum?
BNB Chain is EVM-compatible — smart contracts written for Ethereum in Solidity work on BNB Chain with minimal modification. Key differences: BNB Chain has ~3-second blocks vs Ethereum's ~12 seconds; BNB Chain fees are typically under $0.20 vs Ethereum's variable base-layer fees; BNB Chain has 41 validators vs Ethereum's ~1 million; BNB Chain is more centralized by validator count but faster and cheaper. Both use PoS-style consensus. For high-volume retail DeFi, BNB Chain often wins on cost; for institutional DeFi and highest-value protocols, Ethereum still dominates by TVL.
What is PancakeSwap?
PancakeSwap is the largest decentralized exchange on BNB Chain, running an automated market maker (AMM) model similar to Uniswap. It's one of the highest-volume DEXs in crypto by daily trading volume. PancakeSwap is native to BNB Chain but has also deployed to Ethereum, Arbitrum, and other chains in recent years. CAKE is its native governance/reward token.
Should I hold BNB on Binance or self-custody?
For fee discounts and staking on Binance, keeping some BNB on the exchange makes sense. For long-term holding, self-custody is standard practice. BNB is easily held in any BNB Chain–compatible wallet: MetaMask (with BNB Chain RPC added), Trust Wallet (Binance's official self-custody wallet, natively BNB Chain support), Rabby, or a hardware wallet like Ledger. Bridging BNB between the exchange and self-custody is quick and inexpensive.
How was Binance's 2023 US settlement related to BNB?
The November 2023 US DOJ / FinCEN / OFAC / CFTC settlement with Binance ($4.3 billion combined) was against Binance the exchange operator for AML and sanctions violations. BNB the token was not directly the subject of enforcement in that action. However, BNB was delisted by Binance.US following the 2023 regulatory pressure, and remains unlisted on some US exchanges. This limits US access to BNB — US customers cannot easily buy BNB on regulated US venues in 2026 (verify current listing status).
