Elliott Suthers, previously heading corporate communications at Coinbase, has embarked on a new journey by joining Worldcoin, a company blending biometric data and crypto technology. Suthers assumes the position of Head of Communications for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa at Worldcoin, the brainchild of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, established in 2019, CoinDesk reported.
During his tenure at Coinbase since 2018, Suthers played a pivotal role in navigating the company through its transition to a publicly traded entity in the United States. Now, he brings his expertise to Worldcoin, a venture that aims to merge biometric authentication with cryptocurrency.
Worldcoin’s ambitious project includes the development of a controversial biometric data-harvesting device dubbed the “orb.” This chrome sphere, reminiscent of a bowling ball in size, incorporates a lens designed for iris scanning. The device’s primary function is to verify the authenticity of users, differentiating between humans and automated systems, a crucial step in the evolving landscape of online interactions.
In a statement provided via email, Suthers emphasized the significance of Worldcoin’s mission, stating, “No project in the world today has the potential to distinguish humans from AI online while preserving privacy, enable global democratic processes and eventually show a potential path for programs like AI-funded UBI.”
